Deciding On That French Home Accessories

Rating: 3/5 (1 rating)

Author: Carolyn

Whether one is designing a home for the first time or simply redecorating, there are a lot of options to choose from. One of which is with the use of French home accessories.

These are the perfect pieces needed to create a lovely balance of the rustic and elegant feel. One can indeed spice up any parts of the home with just the right kind of ornaments. It might be hard to come up with a distinct French flavor. This is because the basics of French styling involve a combination of elegance and a primal look

One can see a lot of copper, wrought iron, ceramics and earthenware when it comes to French homes, but they are all with different designs. Two of the most common elements of French styled homes are wrought iron and earth tones. Furnishings made of wrought iron create the perfect rustic appearance of French home styling. Soft earth tones, on the other hand, bring an additional touch of uniqueness to the French style.

For the living room, a stone fireplace would be a great addition to create that French feel. One can have cabinets with wrought iron handles and magnificent details. Rustic flooring is also a nice addition. It can be made to appear like it is made of actual bricks or stones.

An old French look is not hard at all to achieve in the kitchen. With lovely French home accessories all around the room, one can end up feeling like a French cook while creating special dishes any time of the day. Storage jars that look old are going to blend well with the French-style kitchen. A corkboard also feels more French than the modern magnets do. One can also have a wooden bread box and some canisters of the same make.

Hooks and racks made of wrought iron as well as cabinets with wrought iron handles can bring the French feel to the bathroom as well. This can be further embellished with the help of ceramic flooring or one made of polished stones. It is also possible to find French-inspired soap dishes and dispensers, but this might not be that easy.

The bedroom can greatly benefit from the use of warm tones in its accessories. A metal valet stand would create a sense of luxury that is pertinent among the rich ones of France.

Floral lamp shades, canopy beds and iron hooks in the cabinets and door handles are all so French indeed. In addition to all that, the dining area can be adorned with the right upholstery to maximize the French feel for the entire house. Tableware and silverware can benefit a lot from French designs. Even the salt and pepper shakers can come in a design that is distinctively French from all points of view. With all the right things in mind, it is easy to make use of French home accessories and completely utilize the effect they have to bring to the rest of the house. It might involve an additional cost here and there, but it is definitely going to be visually enticing to have around.

Cyclists Should Respect the French Highway Code

Cycling in and around Lyon

Rating: 2.8/5 (4 ratings)

Cyclists can practise their favorite sport in and around , especially in the regions of the Pilat, the Mont d'Or, the Dombes and the Monts du Lyonnais. However, they should always respect the French highway code.

The highway Code for Cyclists

You must respect all the general rules of the Highway Code:

1. Always wear a helmet

2. Have a well-equipped bike

3. Have an insurance policy

4. Adapt my way of driving to the traffic conditions

4. Keep a safe security distance from the cyclist in front of me

5. Do your best to be seen on the road all the time

6. Choose an itinerary that corresponds to your level

7. Drive without endangering the others’ security and your own

8. Know what to do in case of a road accident (emergency units telephone numbers)

9. Respect the environment

10. Respect anybody using the road

12. Respect the rules stipulated by the organizers of any biking event

Drivers and cyclists must respect the safety rules of the Highway Code as they are stipulated in 414-4 I and IV 431-7 articles.

1. When over passing a vehicle or a bike, make sure you have 1 m distance in town or 1.50 m distance out of town from the over passed vehicle or bike.

2. Cyclists or motorcyclists without any side-car or trailer must drive in two on the road. Once the sun has fallen or if another vehicle wants to over pass them, they must follow in one queue.

In case you witness somebody falling out of his bike:

Do not forget to protect yourself and the victim, keep any danger away from the victim, put a safety road sign 150 m up and down the danger area.

Call the emergency services (n° 15, 18 or 112) :

1. Give them your name and telephone number

2. Tell them about the place where you are

3. Describe what has happened and when

4. Give information about the victim: age, his physical state: does he answer questions, can he move all his body parts, does he suffer from hemorrhages, injuries, bleedings…, is he weakening?

5. Give information about any dangers of fire, collision… and wait for the orders of the emergency unit

The victim is unconscious:

If he is still breathing, lay him down in a fetus-like position, take off his helmet if you can and put away any obstacle that could prevent him from breathing, cover him up.

If he does not breathe, move his head in the back, open his mouth and take off any dentals or earth…

Close his nose with your thumb and forefinger, breathe in and then out in the victim’s mouth every 2 seconds.

If he is conscious, keep talking to him and stop any bleeding, do not try to move his body.

The French Pension System

The pension system is in danger

Rating: 3.1/5 (12 ratings)

In France, the workers can retire at age 60 if they have worked 41 to 42 years. The retirement age at 60 was set by former French president Mitterrand in 1982. Some can even retire at age 70 if they wish.
However, some people who work in public transport could retire at age 55; others who have hard jobs like the miners or the train drivers could retire at age 50 but Sarkozy’s government put an end to the exceptions to the system (régimes spéciaux) in 2007.

A general pension system grants 50 to 55 % of the income. This system is based on “distributing” the money and guarantees a minimum pension. In other words, the young active people pay for the retired people.

Unfortunately, the French system has been  in danger for many years and the people who were born between 1945 and 1952 may not benefit from the pension funds anymore when they retire. Despite the increasing longevity and the declining demography, the Left opposes the retirement age over 60. The opponents reject the investing process and the capitalization that mainly concerns people over a certain income like the cadres (executives) who get an extra retired pension (
retraîte complémentaire).
In France, every retired person benefits from a Social Security pension. Nobody can imagine the financial market could have an impact on the pension system. In 2003, Chirac’s government succeeded in extending the increasing number of years to the public sector (from 37.5 to 40, then to 41 years in 2012 and 42 years in 2020).

Today, the talks between the Minister of Labor Eric Woerth, the trade unions and the representatives of the employers (the MEDEF) have just started, but the participants have already disagreed on the main options and the leaders of the major unions are ready to take actions against the government.
The French government and the MEDEF want to raise the retirement age or prolong the contribution period whereas the Left and the Trade Unions would prefer to tax the employers. The richest people may pay tax on their earnings so as to finance the pension system and put an end to the criticism on the “bouclier fiscal” (tax cap)

Child Care in Lyon

Temp nanny in Lyon

Rating: 3.1/5 (10 ratings)

Some parents need temporary child care (garde d'enfants temporaire), especially when they intend to spend a few weeks or months in .
They should contact only professional child care providers that offer occasional baby-sitting services. They usually have qualified baby sitters who can take care of the children under and over 3 for a few hours or days per week . The baby-sitters are chosen according very strict criteria: they must be experienced baby-sitters who easily interact with the children and are aware of first-aid.
However, if you do not work in France or not not intend to hire a nanny for one year, you may not benefit from the reduction of taxes or receive the state aid.

In , there are a few child care agencies that provide temporary nannies (nounous) and the pay range can be from 15 € to 20€ per hour, or about 264 € for 16 hours a month.
If you think that the prices of the professional agencies are too expensive, you can hire a student or a teen as a temp nanny ( about 10 €/hour), but be sure that he or she is reliable.

How to Write A Professional Résumé in French

Writing a Good French CV

Rating: 3.4/5 (16 ratings)

Your French résumé

In France, you do have to send an English version of your CV, except if you are required to do so. Most French employers do not speak English, even if the international profiles are always highly appreciated.
Your French résumé should be very clear and concise, but also correspond to your profile. You may prefer a résumé that highlights your study if you have just left the university, or your work experience if you have been working for over 10 years.
At the same time, your résumé should attract the employer’s attention since he usually receives hundreds of CVs every week. It should be very professional: there cannot be any spelling mistakes or confusing words. It should be considered as the unique identity card of your profile by the employer.
Let’s study this standard French résumé and see why it is a very professional CV:

This French résumé is very clear since the employer has all the contact information and the candidate’s photo at first.
Then, he can easily see the different sections that are in blue bold type. He can also identify the candidate’s profile and see if it corresponds to his expectations since the dates and titles are in bold type.
So, he can use this CV very easily when he meets the candidate for a job interview or if he wants to compare it with other CVs.

Taxes and Social Benefits in France

On January 1 2010 the taxes and the social benefits will increase.

Rating: 3.5/5 (11 ratings)

Taxes(taxes) and social benefits (aides sociales) always increase in January and July in France.

Since January 1 2010, the retired, the poor workers and the people living under the poverty line (seuil de pauvreté) have been the great beneficiaries of the social benefits to rise.

The retired widows who have less than 800 € a month and who receive a reversion benefit (pension de reversion), have their retired allowance increased of 11%.
The workers on a minimum wage are going to earn 8.86 €/h, i.e. 1,343.77 € gross salary per month.
The 24 month CUI (Contrat Unique d’Insertion) will replace all the existing employment contracts that gave work for a long or short term. The CUI is a long-term employment contract to help the workers to integrate the employment market more easily.
Those who live under the poverty line can now receive the RSA, a minimum solidarity benefit, which is 460.09 € per month for a single person without any children.

However, taxes and fees in transport and health are going to rise. TheTGV high speed train fares will increase by 1.9 % and the taxi fares by 1.2 %.
Of course, the social security taxes are also going to increase, especially the fares of the mutual insurance companies by 5 % and the daily cost of your stay in hospital from 16 to 18 €.

The French Health System

Public or private medical services?

Rating: 3.5/5 (11 ratings)

In the French Health System, you can choose private or public medical services.

Public medical service by public hospitals for those who benefit from the compulsory minimum medical cover (couverture sociale) (student's health insurance scheme, the CMU, etc.) on presentation of your medical insurance card.

Some General Practitioners (docteurs généralistes) give treatments in hospitals without an appointment in a "public sector" or with and appointment in the "private sector".

But most GPs work in town (privately). You are free to choose your doctor.
Most specialists can be consulted at the hospital on recommendation of your usual GP.

For minor medical problems you should consult a pharmacist (pharmacien), then a GP if it is necessary.

For medical assistance on weekends or in the middle of the night, you may call SOS Médecins: 04 78 83 51 51 or dial one of the other emergency numbers.

Home visit by a doctor (only General Practitioners), chemist expenses, especially at night, on Sundays and Public holidays, are at supplementary rates.

The standard fee for a GP is 21 euros. The doctor will give you a reimbursement sheet (feuille de remboursement) that you have to send to your social security center.

The French Health System

1. It provides a large choice of GPs and specialists
2. It is funded by French employees (20% of their gross salary) and by the State (Social Security, la sécurité sociale)
3. To be reimbursed you must subscribe to the Social Security and have your Social Security Vitale card
4. To qualify for full reimbursement, you must register with your usual GP
5. You personally contribute to the system by taking out an insurance policy (mutuelle) to cover the difference that is not reimbursed.

You may have more information about the French Health System, the affiliation to the system, insurance policy and a glossary of terms by reading Peter Owen’s guide, Healthcare in France. A Guide for the Expatriate.

Lyon has been Covered by Snow

Cars Trapped in Snow Drift in Lyon

Rating: 3.4/5 (7 ratings)

in Snow and cold ( sous la neige et dans le froid).

Road and rail transport (les transports routiers et ferroviaires) has been disrupted in the Rhone-Alps region since Friday when 11.8 inches lay on the ground.
In , snow started to fall January 7 late in the morning bringing chaos as many buses and most school buses stopped their services due to dangerous driving conditions.
About 3.9 to 7.9 inches of snow fell in as trucks over 7.5 tonnes (les poids lourds de plus de 7 tonnes 5) were not allowed to drive and the 18 vaccination centers were closed.

However, if the main roads were salted in advance, the driving conditions ( les conditions de circulation)  have remained dangerous today on the side roads covered by 4 inches of snow in
Fortunately, the planes have been allowed to leave since 11 a.m. at the Saint-Exupéry airport after about 1,000 passengers spent the night at the airport last night since many flights were cancelled.

Even if the snow stopped falling this morning in , many local people (beaucoup de Lyonnais) may have some trouble tomorrow to go to work if they cannot move their cars trapped in snowdrift (des congères).
