Lyon Festival of Lights takes place every year in Lyon known as the City of Lights in the world.
Lugdunum meaning "the city of lights" was the name given to Lyon by the Romans.
Today, Lyon has been known as the "city of lights" in the world since about 100 sites in Lyon are lit in the evening to symbolize the splendor of the capital of the three Gauls.
Many tourists reserve their hotels a long time before the event to see Lyon by night on 8th December. All the houses and shops are lit up in the city during the Light Festival known as the "Illuminations" which is held every year over 4 days. This celebration dates from December 8th 1852, the first Inauguration of Lyon's Statue Virgin Mary that is located on top of the Fourvière Basilica.
At first, the local people used to light up their windows with candles for 1 night, then the shopkeepers contributed to transform the event into a wonderful time and local tradition when people celebrated the City of Lights in a very friendly atmosphere.
Today, the Light Festival has become very popular not only for the local people but also for the tourists. It offers a magical show of lights created by well-known French designers and lightning profressionals.
